Blog#6: The Looking Glass Self

Social media is a means for people to freely express themselves, or build an image/identity that they don't get to show in real life. It is basically a platform where it is all about themselves and is "a shorthand for the exhibitionism, narcissism"- Jurgenson, N. Selfies are the best representative of this concept, and social media is the perfect platform for people to do it on. Selfies are social photos that one takes of oneself to present what they see of themselves that they also want other people to see. In other words, as Jurgenson mentioned in their book, "selfies make plain the ongoing process of identity construction." Personally, I think it is a normal thing and there is nothing wrong with the desire to self-present oneself with a visual image on social media. One thing that everyone should be minded of is that social media can also be a tool that others use to make judgments on oneself. Therefore, it is necessary to be careful of what you choose to show people, there are things that can bring you frame, while others can cause you consequences that will stick with your identity for the rest of your life.

The selfie below has been distorted in a way that creates an illusion for the audience when they look at it. I'm not a big fan of normal, daily-life selfies. I try to make everything I post on social media a piece of art, something unique, as it is what I want to portray myself on this platform.
