Blog#5: Modularity, Grid, Pattern

 “Grids function throughout society” (p. 187) - Lupton/Phillips

Link to artwork - A special thing about this artwork is that it uses grids to break down the whole piece into small components, but everything still connects to each other.

Grids are used everywhere in our daily life, and of course, in art. Grids are essential in making a good composition for an artwork. They allow us to create symmetrically (or asymmetrical) structures, consistent margins, or even follow the rule of thirds in photography, etc.

The pictures above show the use of grids in creating a piece of one-line drawing from multiple small components. During the process of making it, I had to use a lot of imagination to be able to align everything together, and I could not have done it without using the grids. By breaking down the entire canvas into smaller units, grids allow me to organize what I am going to put on the canvas without being overwhelmed.
