Blog#4: Framing in photography

 

A photo I took when I was learning how to apply framing techniques in photography.

“A frame can serve to either emphasize or downplay its contents.” - Lupton/Phillips. 

Besides lighting and color palette, one of the factors that makes a photograph a good photograph is its composition. And framing plays a crucial role in creating a nice composition for a picture as it not only emphasizes the contents but also controls the vibe of the entire artwork. There are so many rules in photography when it comes to framing, including the rule of thirds, leading lines, symmetry, etc., you name it. These rules are created with only one purpose, which is to emphasize the main "character" of a photograph. For example, the framing of the photo above highlights the eye of my friend, which is the focus of the entire photo. This photo was taken during a small photoshoot that was organized in a corner of my room. With just a projector, I was able to play with different framing techniques to create unique photos. None of the photos created looked like one another, and that was the fun part. Here are some other photos that were taken during that photoshoot:
