Blog#2: A burning match

"Do you ever notice your eye getting stuck in a particular place when looking at an unresolved design? This discord usually occurs because the proportion and placement of elements in relation to each other and to the negative space is off—too big, too tight, too flat, misaligned, and so on." - Lupton and Philips (2015)

Indeed, there are different elements that create a good artwork. However, what matters the most is how those elements work and balance each other. For example, a piece of painting only needs one main subject, thus, other elements in the painting need to "sacrify" in order to make the main subject stand out.  If all elements in a painting do not compliment the subject, the artwork will become... chaotic. During the making of an artwork, the most important things I would focus on are:

- The composition: whether the main subject is at the right ratio, and whether other elements don't get the "spotlight"

- The color palette: whether the color of the main subject stands out, and whether other elements compliment it

I made an artwork called "the burning match" last week. It was a short animation, created by 51 layers. The video started with the sound of a match being lightened up, and it went from where the match is at its brightest moment to where it got burned out and became ashes. Each frame stands for a stage in a person's life, from when a person is at their brightest, most energetic time, to when they become ashes...
